Max's Bar & Grill in Long Branch is a longstanding local fixture where the classic boardwalk bar & grill vibe comes alive. With roots reaching nearly a century back, Max’s has been a go-to for anyone craving casual American fare with an emphasis on sizable, no-frills hot dogs and hearty fried sides.

The atmosphere blends a bustling neighborhood eatery with a beach town casualness, making it a spot that welcomes families, longtime locals, and visitors seeking a relaxed yet lively place to sit down for a meal paired with beer or cocktails. You’ll find the energy varies depending on when you drop in—early evenings bring in families and groups catching up over plates of fried mushrooms, chili cheese hot dogs, and buffalo wings, while weekend nights often feature live music, creating a backdrop that’s lively but still allows for conversation.

Max's is best known for its lineup of hot dogs, ranging from classics like the Jersey Dog and Dirty Dog Chili to creative combinations such as the Mac & Cheese Dog or the Burger topped with onion rings. These menu items pair naturally with shareable snacks like their pretzels, nachos, or fried zucchini, offering a balance of salty and indulgent flavors that complement a cold draft beer or a local brew. Those stopping in for seafood options will find sandwiches like the fried fish or grilled salmon hold their own alongside the famous dogs.

This isn’t a place to expect fine dining or subtle culinary experimentation but rather a spot where familiar comfort food meets straightforward, friendly service. Locals appreciate the consistency—the kind of place where you can drop by without a reservation, order a hearty meal, and settle in among the crowd that ranges from longtime Jersey Shore regulars to families enjoying a casual night out.

Visiting Max’s is ideal during late afternoons into the evening, especially if you want to enjoy something to eat after time on the beach or a stroll along the boardwalk. If the live band is playing, sitting further back gives you space to enjoy the music without it overwhelming your table talk. The kid-friendly menu and generous portions also make it comfortable for families looking for familiar, satisfying meals without fuss.

Ultimately, Max’s Bar & Grill remains a place where the tangible sense of local history meets everyday comfort food. It’s not just about the food itself but the atmosphere of a place that’s been welcoming generations, grounding its identity in simple, good food and a cheerful crowd.

Max's is an iconic restaurant that has been around close to forever. It's a great place to get one of those. Really big hot dogs, like the windmill, except you can also get beer here. The grilled and fried foods are standard for this type of place and the quality is pretty much what you would expect. More than anything, it's an iconic place to visit.

Long due review. I decided to write a review after recommending this place to a friend who will be traveling to NJ for vacations. I stopped by during my last visit to NJ and it was a pleasant surprise. At first I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to make a reservation for a high end restaurant but, I ended up at Max’s. OMG! I decided to stop at Max’s for a “snack” and ended up having a great meal. Highly recommend!

Best boardwalk style Hot Dogs! We started with a nice cold beer - I had blue moon and better half had Kona. For appetizer we shared fried zucchini with the horseradish sauce. It was hot, crunchy, and fresh. For the dogs, I had the Italian while he had the spicy jockey. They also have a kid’s menu. Service was great! We have been customers for years and will continue.

LONG BRANCH: Max's Bar and Grill piqued our attention after being featured on the TV show Kitchen Nightmares, which is surprising that they were even on the show because they have been a staple in the area for almost 100 years! 2028 will be their 100th anniversary! They are famous for their hot dogs, and they also have a full menu to please anyone’s palette. A full bar and local beers complement the American-style menu and it is a spacious space to watch the game and meet people from all over the world! We met a couple visiting from Barcelona who were on their own tour of Bruce Springsteen history. Best of all, leashed and friendly dogs can join you inside and they are always pet friendly. Brie tip: take a photo with the awesome Long Branch, NJ mural on the front of the building.

Haven’t been here since I was a kid, and wow, this is not the 1990’s Max’s anymore (though shoutout to 90’s Max’s, you have my heart). Food was very good, the band was great, and bonus: you can sit far enough back that you can actually hear yourself think if the music’s too much. Kids loved their meals, my husband went full legend and ordered two hot dogs (respect), and my crispy chicken sandwich was roughly the size of a small car but way tastier. And our server? Zero filter in the most classic Central Jersey way. We loved her.
